Mature Tree Audit
Canopy Consulting supported the City of Canada Bay with mature tree auditing across public tree assets, helping Council maintain a clearer understanding of tree condition, risk, and management priorities across the LGA.
Mature public trees are some of the most valuable assets in an urban forest. They provide shade, cooling, amenity, habitat, and character that young replacement trees cannot immediately replicate. They also require structured inspection and management, particularly in streets, parks, golf course areas, reserves, and other high-use public spaces.
The mature tree audit focused on understanding existing trees in context. Each tree needed to be assessed not only for species, age, health, and structure, but also for how it interacted with surrounding public use, roads, paths, open space, and infrastructure.
This type of audit supports proactive management. Rather than waiting for individual complaints or failures, Council can use current tree data to prioritise works, monitor high-value trees, identify structural issues, and plan future inspections.
The work also complements the young tree audit. Together, the two projects provide a clearer picture of canopy at different life stages: newly planted and establishing trees on one hand, and older trees carrying much of the current canopy value on the other.
Scope
of Work
- Mature tree condition audit
- Tree risk assessment
- Health and structure assessment
- Digital asset data capture
- Management recommendations
- Priority works identification
- Future inspection scheduling
Outcome
The audit provided Council with updated information to support safer, more consistent, and more strategic management of mature public trees. For Canopy, the Canada Bay work is a strong example of urban forest asset management in practice: field assessment, structured data, risk awareness, and long-term canopy thinking working together.
