Healthy and established trees are assets in development projects as they can improve the amenity and property land value whilst offering other environmental benefits. However, tree roots can occupy a large area, affect a probable building site, and building and construction can impact other roots of nearby trees. Therefore, selecting suitable trees to be retained or removed on a development site is essential for a more comprehensive approach.

The Australian Standard AS4970-2009 Protection of trees on development sites guides arborists, architects, builders, engineers, land managers, landscape architects, contractors, planners, building surveyors, those concerned with the care and protection of trees, and all others interested in integration between trees and construction.

Arborists can assess the benefits and constraints of a tree, ensuring effectiveness and efficiency in the development's design in accordance with the consent authority requirements and industry best practices. Thus, it is best to consult tree professionals, such as Canopy Consulting, to get the job right.

Our development services include Arboricultural Impact Assessment, Tree Protection Management Plans, Project Arborist Services, Trunk and Branch Protection, and Root Investigation and Mapping services.

Development Consent

When undertaking development activities that could potentially damage trees, you will more than likely need approval through a Development Application (DA), with important accompanying information which is required when applying for a DA.

When you apply for a DA, the planning authority will assess and decide whether there are sufficeitnt grounds for approval or they may refuse. Once the application is approved, there will be conditions or guidelines on what you can do to the tree.
